Mesa, Arizona Marks Five Years as the First Autism Certified City Worldwide

Friday, November 8, 2024

Mesa,

Mesa, Arizona, is commemorating its fifth year as the world’s first Autism Certified City™, an initiative led by Visit Mesa. This landmark celebrates Mesa’s dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, along with their families. Since obtaining the certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), Mesa has been proactive in improving its facilities, services, and community practices to promote inclusivity.

“Five years ago, Mesa became the first Autism Certified City granted by IBCCES, a milestone that we are proud to celebrate,” said Alison Brooks, Vice President of Marketing & Destination Experience at Visit Mesa. “This achievement reflects Mesa’s dedication to promoting inclusive travel. We commend the businesses and community members who completed autism-specific training, making our city a welcoming and accessible destination for all.”

The Autism Certified City™ designation is granted by IBCCES to communities that have trained and certified key stakeholders—including those in healthcare, education, local government, and the hospitality and leisure industries—to better accommodate individuals with autism and other cognitive disorders.

“Mesa, Arizona has truly set the standard for inclusivity over these past five years,” says Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman. “Their ongoing dedication to upholding the standard of an Autism Certified City™ and their relentless efforts to enhance accessibility are truly commendable. It’s inspiring to see how their commitment is making a tangible difference in the lives of autistic individuals and their families, creating a more inclusive community for all.”

Mesa’s celebration of this achievement will run from November 2024 to April 2025, beginning with the “Live Life Limitless” event on November 7th. This event invites both residents and visitors to engage with autism-friendly activities and initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s inclusivity. The festivities will peak in April—Autism Acceptance Month—with various events, activities, and community engagements designed to support and celebrate the autistic community.

Since its inception in 2001, IBCCES has been a global leader in providing training and certification in autism, neurodiversity, and cognitive disorders for organizations. These programs, developed by subject matter experts and autistic self-advocates, aim to enhance staff understanding and improve accommodations throughout the community. IBCCES remains the sole credentialing organization to offer such comprehensive programs, which support ongoing education and sustained assistance.

Furthermore, IBCCES has developed AutismTravel.com and CertifiedAutismCenter.com, which are complimentary online resources that assist parents in finding certified locations and professionals that meet the Certified Autism Center™ requirements.
